Feels attempted to process their own feelings from their emotional surgery on Grim. The task had been a difficult one, not just in finding places to safely hang the guilt he’d been using to mentally flay himself but also in the act of collecting it all in the first place. Feeling their friend – they couldn’t consider him any less than that, not after the realization of how much of the guilt he carried was over what he’d done to them and their technicians – dissolve into despair and self-hatred, knowing they had been the cause, had been the most difficult thing they’d ever experienced. Or done.

But Grim had known exactly what he was asking, and who he was asking it from. He always did, that calculating mind of his, always several steps ahead, only failing when it ran up against another of Kydell’s carelessly applied roadblocks. And Feels had to admit that his logic was sound. From their memories of their time in the SAF, amplified guilt would go a long way toward bringing much of the fleet to its knees, saving a great many lives on both sides in the process. They should probably already be using the weaponized guilt against the fleet, but Grim had mentioned needing them to help finalize his plans and maybe he’d need them to adjust the results of their emotional surgery.

And as much as they told themselves they were still angry at him, that they could never forgive him for what he’d done to their team, that Baden was home and her people deserved protecting…

Grim’s needs came first.

The necromancer seemed calmer and more focused now. Feels inhaled his emotions, wrapping themselves in his feelings of hope and determination, even on the eve of his fight against one of the most dangerous admirals in the Confederation’s fleets. The guilt was there, underlying everything, but now it served only to strengthen his resolve.

Still, Feels would be haunted by Grim’s emotions at his weakest moment, and the knowing that they had caused it. They’d heard wild tales of surgeons in the Space Defense Legion who actually cut into their patients to reach the parts they were fixing, adding more wounds as a step of the healing process. Feels wondered if this was how those healers felt, knowing they were adding more pain before administering the cure. How could they live with themselves after, even knowing the pain was necessary?

They would need to learn.

“Feels…” It was Grim again, his emotions shifting to fear and apology. “I need another favor.”

What do you need me to adjust? What doesn’t feel right? They must have made a mistake with the spell. So they would fix it. Whatever Grim needed, whatever he wanted to become, they would help him get there.

But Grim had other intentions. “There’s nothing wrong with your spell, dear friend. I wish you’d done it years ago, although I suppose I wasn’t ready yet.”

Feels stretched their senses and realized they were now alone, the emotions of others now far away in other parts of the ship.
